PLAYGROUND PICK // TWIN PEAKS ROCKS DETROIT FROM CHICAGO AT EL CLUB

Chicago five-piece lo-fi DIY rock darlings, Twin Peaks, are no strangers to churning out riotous and anthemic jams. Cadien James, Clay Frankel, Jack Dolan, Conner Brodner and Colin Croom are chasing the tail of their third and most well-rounded record Down In Heaven released earlier this year. Known for their disheveled psychedelia, Twin Peaks found a happy medium by trimming the frayed edges of their raucousness just enough to expand on what they do best without compromise on Heaven channeling the likes of The Kinks, The Pixies and the sunshiny garage-rock intimacy of the late 1960’s.

Formed while the founding members still strolled the halls of their respective high schools in 2009, it comes as no surprise that their debut record Sunken (2013) was recorded in a basement using minimal equipment and Garageband. Sunken, which toggles with playfully unhinged punk influences acted as Peaks blueprint for their perfectly unpolished pathway to being the unsung mavens of porous stripped down rock. While three of the four members did a quick stint in college, the friends/musical allies dropped out collectively to pursue Twin Peaks full-time; a testament to their dedication and affection towards risk and the unknown, themes that are sonically present in their post-college 2014 record Wild Onion. The welcomed addition of keyboardist Colin Croom on helps steer their third album into lush territory. Though the band may politely reject the term “mature” to describe Down In Heaven it’s hard to deny that their latest record is a tangible growth spurt with structurally nuanced hooks and cohesive arrangements that are more narrative than static. Regardless of where you find yourself or how you categorize the eclectic subtlety of Twin Peaks one thing is certain: Twin Peaks will do what they want. The result? Flirtatiously tangled fun and bursts of unexpected frenzy; no apologies.
