DAY ONE: Movement Electronic Music Festival 2017 officially kicks off on Saturday, May 27 at noon.  This day of the festival is drenched in Detroit Love (literally- see Carl Craig’s curated music showcase).

PLAYGROUND DETROIT is highlighting both top emerging and legendary Detroit music acts hand-picked from the entire weekend line-up so you don’t have to worry where you need to be all weekend long. Here is part one of our three-part weekend hit list of Detroit-grown performances and more emerging talent from across the country.

Luke Hess //4PM-5:45PM [Main Stage]

DJ and Producer Luke Hess is no stranger to the Movement Festival. A native emerging as an artist in the 1990’s , Hess experienced techno’s  and evolution through its transformative years. Luke Hess put his flavor on techno music by utilizing production methods reflective of his background in STEM.

Hess has released  through well-known labels like his own DeepLabs, Carl Craig’s Planet-E,  Brian Kage’s Beretta Grey and Kenneth Christiansen’s Echocord Colour (Denmark) collaborating with artists like Omar S and Sascha Dive.  Live shows are  Luke Hess’ element. His precise and technical nature translates to his live show where he creates a tailored celestial connection with the audience through the language of trance-y deep techno mixes. With over 15 years in the biz and previous Movement weekend performances under his belt, Luke Hess will not disappoint.

Norm Talley // 6-7PM [Made in Detroit Stage]

If you live in Detroit you’ll find native DJ and producer Norm Talley playing gigs all around town with a seasoned experience in electronic music. A cosmic and mystical house fanatic, Norm is constantly conjoining house music with otherworldly sounds moving bodies at our favorite venues like TV lounge, Whiskey Disco and Motor City Wine  with his extensive and bouncy house repertoire and collection. A sustained presence rooted in the Motor City, Norm Talley is an essential Detroit performer.

Stacey Pullen // 7-9PM [Star Gate Stage]

Nurtured by The Belleville Three,  this distinguished producer and DJ has forged a path of his own via techno music innovation. In the second wave of Detroit of techno music, Pullen navigated to the underground nightlife frequenting Detroit’s techno meccas of the 1990’s and rubbing elbows with  nightlife nobility.

Stepping out into the spotlight, Pullen formed label Blackflag Recordings in 1998 and has since yielded  well received releases from himself as and artists  David Herrero, Sergio Fernandez, Diego Infanzon and more.  By combining elements of house,  soul, and techno Pullen has literally put in hours upon hours rocking shows internationally and in some of the city’s favorite venues. This year he will kick off things early with an Official Movement Pre-Party in Toronto Canada b2b Italy’s Neverdogs  Saturday, May 20th.

Stacey Pullen will also rev up the Motor City with his Official Movement Opening Party at the Magic Stick venue on Woodward Avenue. Pullen is a live wire when it comes to getting the 2017 Movement festival lit and he is sure to keep the inertia at full force throughout his festival appearance in Carl Craig’s Detroit Love showcase on Saturday.

The Belleville Three // 9PM-10:30PM [Main Stage]

Renowned as Detroit’s techno revolutionaries, this year Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson will perform for the first time under their unified name “The Belleville Three.”

For the first time in over 40 years, The Belleville Three are getting in the studio together, making music as a unit and DJing on an international tour. Detroit’s Movement Festival is your opportunity to witness the greatness of this trio in the place where the visionaries created a community for techno music. For The Belleville Three, bringing the first wave of Detroit Techno to the spotlight meant pushing new limits in the genre and bringing the sound to virgin ears in the sweaty grimy underbelly of Detroit’s nightlife.

The Belleville Three put Detroit techno on the map setting precedent for generations of subsequent producers and DJ’s. Many artists in participating in the festival have found inspiration in these artists, collaborated with them or dream of reaching their caliber of international success and industry wisdom.

Earl Sweatshirt 11PM – 12AM [RBMA Stage] 

Although unlike the others on our like, Earl Sweatshirt is a not a Detroiter, however the “critically-acclaimed and commercially-successful rapper releases through his own Tan Cressida imprint on Columbia Records. His debut album, Doris, debuted at #2 on the Billboard charts and he followed it up with the self-produced and equally celebrated album I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside.”

His highly technical and deeply personal raps have been praised by influential media such as The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NPR, and The New Yorker amongst others. Don’t miss your chance to see this rising rapper in flesh!
