MICHIGAN CENTRAL DEPOT STATION THROUGH THE YEARS

Is there another ruin that has held the spotlight as fervently as the Michigan Central Depot Station? It’s one of the most recognizable architectural ruins in the US, and has been the subject of numerous newspaper articles, books, and even TV commercials. The attention might be due its monumental but battered architecture; it might be its overwhelming image in an otherwise low density landscape. Maybe it’s the ultimate symbol of the automobile’s complete triumph over public transportation. Most would agree that nothing else in the city matches it for sheer magnificence, so it seems fitting that the MCS receive the attention that it does. Read the New York Times’s article, “Seeking a Future for a Symbol of a Grander Past“, to hear about the ongoing debate for its future: no longer a ruin, but a living space.
