Last night fiber-artist Paula Schubatis had a one night solo exhibition of interwoven artifacts at The Gallery Project, an industrial very large 2-story warehouse in Eastern Market. The enormous space quietly sits across from the popular Redbull House of Art gallery space, which also had it’s Cycle 9 opening happening. Ironically, Schubatis is a Redbull HOA graduate; her woven fibers work was featured at the space for Cycle 6 exactly one year ago.  One year later, and the entire first floor including the various auxiliary rooms in The Gallery Project were filled with large-scale sculpture and installations. A giant blow-up air dancer, something normally found at a car sales lot, waved wildly outside the gate of entrance inviting explorers to experience her work.

Throughout the warehouse, Schubatis created countless installations and mystical environments utilizing everyday found objects interwoven, joined, manipulated, sometimes lit with twinkle lights, or under large spotlights. She explained, “When I first saw this space, I just knew I needed all of it. This is a body of work I’ve been working on for about a year now and I had to show it all here. I wanted it to feel like you are exploring your grandparents attic and that feeling that you aren’t supposed to be there, but still want to look around to find interesting things.”

The effect of turning items that would be generally considered every day or even trash, into magical and curious environments and sculptures is enchanting. The complexly woven colored garbage bags, giant yarn strands and twinkle lights [seen above] look as if they have their own eco-system, each one becoming a world of its own. The arrangement of ladders and unblown metallic balloons in a dark side room, illuminates an abstract giraffe sculpture, sitting in a sad, time out corner. A lonely chair in the corner glistens like a miniature holiday tree, featuring hang-tags, metallic yarns, and other woven items. Several oversized party streamers and orange construction flags haunt and ‘decorate’ the largest gallery room.

Paula Schubatis is a Detroit based painter and fiber-artist.  Schubatis breaks down spaces into modular components, and reassembles them using her own contrived systems of hierarchy.  She describes herself as ‘captivated’ by the interactions of colors and forms, and has an intimate and fluid understanding of their dynamic relationships.  Her works are introspective examinations of the figure framed by the intersection of architecture and nature, through the immediacy of light.
