BELLE ISLE AQUARIUM RESURRECTED FOR ONE DAY

Belle Isle Aquarium

America’s Oldest Aquarium, 1904, Albert Kahn.

Belle Isle Aquarium is the oldest aquarium in the US, dating back to 1904, designed by architect Albert Kahn. It is part of the Belle Isle Conservatory located on the beautiful park and island in Detroit, Michigan. Due to financial issues, the aquarium was shut down in 2005. There are several local groups including Friends of Belle Isle, who are working hard to re-open the historic landmark. Today the aquarium was opened to the public as a part of an annual effort to bring attention and visitors back, in hopes that it will soon be able to permanently re-open. Thousands of people showed up to show their support and interest in keeping this attraction open for the next generation to enjoy. Check out the video below on the man behind the effort from The Detroit Free Press. Read the full article here.
